“I can’t do it! It’s not working!” Tourè exclaimed his frustration to Amari who was watching her
kite gallantly fly through the sky. The two were in an open lush green field not too far from their
homes. “Well, just keep trying,” Amari responded without looking at Tourè. Tourè picked up his
kite and launched it in the air, but it spiraled back to the ground. “There’s not enough wind.” He
picked up his kite and launched it again, and down it came again. “Just have some faith. You
have to have faith.” Amari reeled her kite in and walked over to Tourè. “It’s getting dark now. You
can try again tomorrow,” she said. “If it didn’t work today, I don’t see why it would work
tomorrow,” Tourè rebutted.
The two would go back to the field the next day and the day after that and the day after that, and
Tourè was right. Nothing changed. Again and again Amari’s kite would soar beautifully and
decorate the sky while Tourè’s seemingly couldn’t find the life to leave the ground. “I know what
it is!” Tourè got an idea. “Your kite is better than mine; let’s exchange and I bet it will fly.” Amari
laughed, “No, I don’t think that’s what it is, but here.” They exchanged kites and Tourè was sure
now that the kite would fly. “Watch! Watch!” he shouted at Amari “Watch!” He ran off with her kite
and launched it. The kite fluttered a bit before the wind got underneath it and sent it towards the
skies blue. Tourè laughed with excitement, ”See! See! I told you!” He readjusted his stance and
his grip to gain control of the kite. Amari got up off the grass and ran over to Tourè. “The only
reason you’re flying the kite is because you believed you would. You had faith.” “No, I told you
your kite was better,” Tourè did not yet understand. “If that’s the case, how come I can fly your
kite?” Tourè watched Amari launch his kite and watched it take off and soar high above his. “You
see, there’s nothing wrong with your kite. You just never believed you could fly it. I bet if we
switched back you’d be able to fly it now because you believe.” And so said, so was done. It
was then Tourè learned, whatever you think, is what’s true. Whatever you believe in and
whatever you believe is what’s real and you’ve got to have faith.
